What led you to your career at Costain?

"I had a genuine interest in the impressive and innovative projects that Costain has delivered. As an apprentice, being able to work on some of the UK’s biggest infrastructure schemes and  see real positive impact on the surrounding communities, felt like an amazing opportunity.

"When researching my career options, Costain’s strong early careers programme stood out to me, offering clear development opportunities and support for growth within the industry by working alongside experienced colleagues and peers. I was also drawn towards Costain’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity, especially their recognition for hiring and supporting women within such a male dominated industry."

How does your role contribute to improving people’s lives?

"As a junior planner, my role plays an important part in ensuring that projects designed to improve people’s lives are delivered effectively on time and within budget. By developing and maintaining project schedules, I help project teams make informed decisions and identify risks early. This helps our customers achieve value for money whist maintaining a high standard of safety and quality. Even though I work behind the scenes I know that the accuracy and reliability of the plan I produce play a vital role in delivering these projects that ultimately, have a positive impact on people’s lives."

What’s your biggest professional achievement and why?

"My biggest professional achievement so far has been helping another apprentice develop their knowledge and skills in P6 and project planning. Being trusted to take on this responsibility has been a real milestone for me, showing that my knowledge and experience are recognised and valued by the team. I take pride in being able to support someone else’s development whilst strengthening my own understanding of the subject and adding value to Costain."

What do you enjoy most about working at Costain?

"What I enjoy most about working at Costain is the team and the strong support system that surrounds me. Since I joined Costain I have felt encouraged to ask questions, share ideas and learn from peers or senior members who have more experience. Costain’s culture of mentorship and teamwork makes it easy to develop both professionally and personally."

What have you learned / what has inspired you during your time at Costain?

"During my time at Costain I have learnt to become more confident in myself and my abilities. I’ve developed the confidence to speak up, share my ideas and trust the knowledge I’ve gained through my work and training. Attending industry events like the Project Controls Expo has also been a huge source of inspiration, giving me the confidence to have meaningful conversations with Costain’s customers and within the industry."

What advice would you give to someone starting out in their career?

"My advice would be to ask as many questions as possible and get involved with as much as you can at Costain. There is so much to learn from everyone in your team and on projects, and everyone is willing to share their knowledge and experience. Getting involved with events, networking opportunities and training opportunities also helps to build a broader understanding of how everything fits together."
