Meet Richie, an Operations Manager working in our road sector.

What led you to your career at Costain?

"I joined Costain shortly after it was awarded a 15 year contract to deliver regular road maintenance activity in Area 14, which covers the North East of England. I have worked on Area 14 for over 20 years in roles covering construction, road maintenance and repair, and incident management."

How does your role contribute to improving people’s lives?

"In my role as Operations Manager, I’m involved in regular health and safety briefings and I also chair the Front Line Manager Forum, which is attended by operatives, works supervisors and managers. These meetings help to uphold the highest possible safety standards for people working on site and provide a safe space for people to raise any issues or concerns."

What’s your biggest professional achievement and why?

"It has been hugely rewarding to have the opportunity to support my operations team colleagues with their professional development journeys at Costain. I’ve worked with managers and supervisors to help give them greater confidence in their decision making, which has helped their ability to carry out their roles within the programme."

What do you enjoy most about working at Costain?

"The opportunity to get involved in the daily planning and subsequent delivery of the high volume of activities within the programme, which creates a demanding, yet stimulating and ultimately rewarding working environment.

"Costain also provides a variety of training opportunities to support your career development. I’ve enrolled in programmes ranging from temporary works to health and safety and site management, where I’ve met people from across the business and improved my ability to carry out my day to day role."

What have you learned / what has inspired you during your time at Costain?

"I’ve worked with many great colleagues on the programme and developed strong working relationships, which has supported overall productivity and morale. Costain works in other infrastructure sectors including rail, water and energy, and the breadth of training courses means there has been ample opportunity to listen and learn from colleagues who have worked in these sectors, which can only be a positive."

What advice would you give to someone starting out in their career?

"Be open to advice and other people’s opinions. You should also always have the courage to ask about something if you’re not sure – that’s how you learn."
