Delivering efficiencies
We were able to reduce design time by 27%, cut design cost by 30% and deliver 78% of schemes ahead of schedule – and so design and construct more work ahead of expectations.
Area 7 consists of 79 km of motorway and 428 km of trunk roads in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland. It includes stretches of the M1, M69, M6, as well as the A1, A14, and A46.
Our A-One+ joint venture is Highways England’s service provider for Area 7. In 2013/14, we were allocated a portfolio of 243 schemes to deliver with a combined budget of £64 million. These schemes comprised road renewals, structures and improvements. Our efficiencies meant we could construct an additional 63 schemes and design a further 130.
One of the projects was the A5 Daventry International Rail and Freight Terminal (DIRFT), including eight priority schemes on a difficult section of A5 near junction 18 of the M1. There were many stakeholders of national commercial importance, including Stobart, Royal Mail, DHL and Tesco, as well potentially difficult and intricate traffic management. We completed the scheme seven days early, with no complaints or incidents.
- Early and proactive face-to-face communication with stakeholders
- Ongoing communication of clear concise plans detailing work phases, diversion routes and programme
- Numerous letters of praise from stakeholders complementing successful delivery and communications.
"A-one+ have engaged with me, our Highways England area team and Navitas as a truly collaborative delivery unit. We have jointly solved problems and taken construction programme delivery to a new level."
