Customer: Centrica Storage Limited

Services: Consultancy & advisory, Asset optimisation, Complex programme delivery

Date: 2011 to 2013

We modified this onshore gas reception and treatment terminal to handle gas produced from the York field, then the largest known undeveloped gas reserve in the southern North Sea.

Key benefits:

  1. 400,000+ manhours worked without a lost time incident
  2. Plant designed to handle 120 million cubic feet/day of gas from the York field
  3. The York field will produce enough gas to meet the demands of half a million households
  4. Largest single project within the Easington gas terminal in 20 years
  5. 97% of all project waste diverted from landfill

Brownfield development

We constructed the new treatment plant on the existing COMAH Tier 1 facility, crossing it at several points. This was achieved without an impact on the operation of the storage facility.

The Easington terminal processes gas from the Rough underground gas storage facility, which is critical to the nation’s energy security, representing 70% of the UK’s total gas storage capacity.

Centrica’s objective was to extract and process gas from a new gas reserve: the York gas field in the southern North Sea. The offshore elements were executed by others, with Costain responsible for building a new gas treatment plant on the existing Easington terminal.

The project team was able to re-use some redundant process stream equipment from the older Amethyst Field flow which previously came ashore at Easington. Identifying equipment on site which could be re-used was a sustainable solution which also reduced the capital cost of the new facility.
