Costain’s support has included:

  • The new concourse, equivalent in size to 8 tennis courts, has doubled the overall space for passengers. The roof of the concourse features 945m2 of ETFE pillows, which use the same technology as the biospheres at the Eden Project in Cornwall to provide natural light.

  • The railway upgrades saw Costain divert existing cables to accommodate the new airport entrance foundations, and latterly adding track modifications, in total creating £65m in savings for Network Rail.

  • Accessibility improvements included enhancing wheelchair users’ access, installing 5 high-capacity lifts and 8 escalators, plus integrating new signage, including braille, into the wayfinding signage strategy.

Key benefits

Cutting carbon emissions and journey times

  1. The project used almost 3,000m3 of low-carbon concrete, whilst the use of LED lighting and gearless lifts throughout the station is estimated to bring an annual cost saving of nearly £60,000 and an annual reduction of 144 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
  2. The passenger experience has been dramatically improved. The upgrades to the railway have reduced journey times, improved access to and from platforms, and upon arrival at Gatwick passengers are greeted with spacious, bright surroundings.
  3. 24/7 station and flight path operations were maintained throughout the construction
