Starlight Point film

The dismantling of Starlight Point, the former welfare accommodation and office building which was originally established back in 2010 to support the building of Terminal 2, marked the end of an era at Heathrow.

This is one of the first significant Costain projects to be completed at Heathrow and given its location right next to Terminal 2 and the daytime delivery schedule, it required careful planning to ensure that airport operations could continue unhindered. The team used Virtual Reality to create an immersive environment and test scenarios including the lift plan, the dismantling strategy and the approach to removing the modules from site, streamlining the programme before works began. This was critical given that the team was required to navigate a 49-metre ceiling height at the compound, and the congested nature of the Central Terminal Area, with low-loaders transporting each module out of the airport via the main tunnel.

“We have worked closely with our Heathrow colleagues, with Wilson James and with our supply chain partners Hughes and Salvidge and Swain Group to successfully deliver this project. Through collaboration and innovation, we have removed the modules intact, allowing them to be repurposed for future use and enabling airport operations to continue at pace.”
