Costain, as part of the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA), is delivering hundreds of kilometres of new pipeline for Anglian Water.

Costain is the principal contractor at Anglian Water’s site at Bexwell, where it is delivering a series of essential works to enable the strategic pipeline project, including the construction of a new pumping station.

In the video below, Bryan Williams, Framework Director at Costain and Tom Shepherd, Senior Project Manager, explain what Costain is delivering at Bexwell.

What is the strategic pipeline project?

Anglian Water’s strategic pipeline is one of Europe’s biggest environmental projects and is the largest drinking water project the UK has seen for a generation.

The pipeline is part of a 580km long water network that will stretch from North Lincolnshire to Essex and go into full supply before 2030.

Why is the project so important?

The East of England is one of the driest regions in the country, with only two-thirds of England’s average rainfall. It is also one of the fastest growing, with potential population growth of one million people by 2045.

Together, these challenges make the Anglian Water region particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Once complete, the pipeline will enable up to 55 million litres of water to be moved from ‘wetter’ to ‘drier’ parts of the region.

About the Bexwell site

Bexwell is a strategically important site on the strategic pipeline project. It acts as a connector for two sections of the pipeline:

  1. To the north, a 51-kilometre pipeline between Bexwell and Etton, near Peterborough.
  2. To the south, a 71-kilometre pipeline between Bexwell and Bury St Edmunds.

What is Costain delivering at Bexwell?

Costain is constructing a new pumping station at Bexwell to support the transfer of water from wetter to drier parts of the region.

The project has required Costain to carry out a series of critical enabling works, which have included extensive modification works to an existing reservoir so it is fit to serve the new pipeline, as well as installing a temporary recirculation pump. These works have been completed with no disruption to the existing water network.
