Costain, the engineering solutions provider, is pleased to announce it has been appointed by Highways England to deliver three smart motorway schemes in a Costain-led joint venture with Galliford Try worth in excess of £300 million.
England’s motorways and major A roads are used by around four million drivers every day and upgrading and improving the network is a focus of significant government investment to support economic growth.
The smart motorway programme is part of Highways England’s Collaborative Delivery Framework, to which Costain was appointed in November 2014. The activity will focus on increasing capacity on the M1 between junctions 13 to 16, 16 to 19 and 24 to 25. Work is due to start in autumn for the M1 16 to 19 scheme.
These improvements will include works to allow traffic to utilise the hard shoulder, the construction of a concrete centre reserve barrier and the introduction of roadside technology to monitor traffic flows and communicate with drivers using improved electronic signage.
