- Traffic has successfully been switched to the new Allerdene bridge
- The milestone will optimise traffic flow and enhance connectivity at the Coal House junction
Costain, the infrastructure solutions company, along with its client National Highways, has delivered a major milestone on the A1 Birtley to Coal House project. Traffic has been switched to use the newly constructed Allerdene bridge at junction 67 at Coal House.
In a phased approach to optimise traffic flow and ease congestion, the northbound traffic exiting at junction 67 has now started using the bridge.
This milestone enables construction and re-alignment of other lanes to progress and road users will see other lanes transition to the new bridge over the coming months.
Once complete works will deliver reduced congestion, improved traffic flow and heightened road safety measures.
