Motorway Contractors Support Life Saving Charity

5 November 2015

A team from the M1 Smart Motorway project, led by Costain, working in collaboration with Aggregate Industries and WJ, recently stepped in to solve a problem for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance.

Staff at the charity had problems with the car park at their new charity ‘super shop’ in Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire. Jim Vickrage- Fundraising Manager explains why they needed specialist help: "We wanted to resurface and re-grade our car park to make it safe for our customers and we also wanted to put in a ramp to provide easy access for wheelchairs and pushchairs. As we started to take up the surface it became apparent that the car park was built on a huge rock, which was very difficult to slice and remove.

“Costain, which is recognised as one of the UK’s leading engineering solutions providers already support our charity and heard about the problem. They immediately offered their support and arranged for specialist machinery to remove the existing car park.

‘’The speed and quality of the work delivered was amazing.

"We now have a brilliant car park with full wheelchair access and plenty of space for shoppers and people to drop stuff off. The shop has performed brilliantly since it opened and this is in no small part because of the good will of these companies. The significant cost saving for the charity has made a huge difference."

Richard Paddey, Senior Community Relations Manager at Costain said: “We are very proud to be able to support the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance wherever possible and understand the vital role it plays within the community.

“The work that we undertook at the Mansfield Woodhouse charity shop is a great demonstration of the collaboration between Costain, Aggregate Industries and WJ. This project would not have been possible without the full commitment of all organisations, and we thank Aggregate Industries and WJ for their support in joining us in this community partnership.’’

A spokesperson for Aggregate Industries said: "We're proud to support such an important charity as the Air Ambulance Service and we were happy to provide aggregates, asphalt and surfacing teams to help lay the new car park. We take pride in the partnerships we forge with our customers and especially the communities we operate in. This was a great opportunity to display that.”

Andy Walker, WJ Commercial Director, added: “WJ have developed a growing commitment to our corporate social responsibilities and immediately agreed to back the initiative proposed by Costain. The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance service has been operating for 21 years and plays an important, often lifesaving, role in the community and being purely charity funded presented us with an ideal opportunity to show our support.”

Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance charity shops sell donated goods. All proceeds from the charity shops go towards their life saving emergency service which saves local lives everyday. For more information on the charity and to find your local charity shop visit www.ambucopter.co.uk.
